About Ryan Montazer

I am a lifelong learner with an academic background in mechanical engineering, mathematics, and computational fluid dynamics. My journey has taken me through graduate research, software engineering, teaching, and entrepreneurship, bringing together my interests in mathematics, technology, and solving complex problems.

Beyond my academic and professional pursuits, running and exploring the world have been important parts of my life. I have spent more than two decades running, traveled across four continents, and experienced life in several major cities across North America. These experiences, along with my continuing interests in learning, personal challenges, and discovering new places, have shaped the direction of my life and the stories I share on this website.

My Academic and Engineering Background

My academic journey has brought together mathematics, engineering, and scientific computing. Although these fields are often treated as separate disciplines, much of my education and research has focused on the connections between them, particularly the use of mathematical and computational methods to understand physical systems.

Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics

I earned two undergraduate degrees, one in Mechanical Engineering and another in Mathematics. Studying both disciplines gave me the opportunity to approach problems from complementary perspectives: engineering provided a foundation in physical systems and practical applications, while mathematics strengthened my understanding of the theoretical principles behind them.

This combination became particularly valuable as my academic interests moved toward applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, and computational research.

Applied Mathematics and Fluid Dynamics

I completed my Master of Applied Science in Applied Mathematics at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where my research focused on fluid dynamics and chaotic advection.

My master’s thesis, Effect of Geometry on the Behavior of Steady Newtonian Fluid in a Multiply Connected Domain, explored how geometry influences fluid behavior. The research involved numerical methods, including spectral methods and compact finite differences, alongside mathematical models involving the Navier–Stokes equations and related fluid dynamics concepts.

This experience strengthened my interest in using mathematics and computation to investigate complex physical phenomena.

PhD Research in Computational Fluid Dynamics

Following my master’s degree, I began PhD research at the University of Toronto, focusing on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

My research involved numerical simulations of fluid flow, including work with the Navier–Stokes equations, the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method, and C++ programming. It brought together my earlier education in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, and numerical computation, further strengthening my interest in scientific computing and computational research.

My Professional Journey

My professional journey has taken me through academic research, software engineering, and education. Over time, I have developed a career that combines technical problem-solving with teaching, independent learning, and building new projects.

My experience in software engineering has involved programming, backend development, and working with technologies such as Python, C++, SQL, and cloud-based tools. Alongside software development, teaching mathematics has remained an important part of my professional life, from my earlier university teaching experience to working independently with students.

In 2019, I founded Lifetime Learner, an education business focused on mathematics and software engineering. It has allowed me to combine my technical background with my interest in helping others learn, while also giving me the independence to explore new ideas and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Today, I continue developing Lifetime Learner while exploring opportunities at the intersection of education, technology, and software development. More details about my academic and professional experiences are available in my Professional Journey section.

Exploring the World

Exploring the world has become an important part of my life, giving me opportunities to experience different cultures, discover new cities, and learn beyond academic and professional settings.

So far, my travels have taken me across four continents: North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. In 2026, I undertook an extended international journey that included cities such as Yerevan, Istanbul, Rome, Paris, Berlin, London, Cairo, Seoul, and Tokyo. These experiences strengthened my interest in exploring the world and documenting the places I visit.

My longer-term ambition is to explore all six inhabited continents, with South America and Australia remaining important destinations in that journey. Beyond visiting landmarks, I enjoy experiencing cities through their neighborhoods, public spaces, universities, museums, and everyday life.

Cities I Have Called Home

Beyond traveling, I have also experienced life in several major North American cities, including Vancouver, Toronto, Montréal, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Living in different cities has given me opportunities to adapt to new environments, build new routines, and experience different ways of life. Each place has contributed something different to my personal journey, from academic and professional experiences to running, exploring, and building connections.

These experiences are documented in greater detail in my World Travel section, where I share the cities, countries, and continents I have explored, along with the experiences that have shaped my journey.

Running and Personal Explorations

Running has been part of my life for more than two decades, becoming one of my longest-lasting personal pursuits. Over the years, I have recorded more than 6,000 kilometers of running, achieved a sub-40-minute 10K and a 1:35 half marathon, and experienced several cycles of training, setbacks, and comebacks.

My long-term ambition is to run a marathon in under three hours. Beyond race results, running has taught me the value of consistency, patience, and competing against myself. It has also become one of my favorite ways to explore cities and experience the places where I live and travel.

My interests beyond running have included hiking, paddleboarding, cooking, exploring cafés and restaurants, and visiting places of historical and cultural interest. Some of these activities have been occasional experiences, while others have developed into longer personal projects. Together, they reflect my curiosity about the world and my interest in trying new things.

I share more about these experiences in my Running and Explorations sections, including my training history, personal challenges, and experiences beyond academic and professional life.

A Life of Learning

Learning has never been limited to classrooms or academic degrees for me. It has been a continuous part of my life, shaping the way I approach professional challenges, personal goals, and new experiences.

Throughout my journey, I have often moved between different fields and interests. From studying mathematics and engineering to working in software development, building my own education business, and exploring new places, I have found that each experience offers something different to learn. Some require technical knowledge and analytical thinking, while others demand adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to begin again.

Running has reinforced this perspective in a particularly meaningful way. Returning to training after setbacks has taught me that progress is rarely a straight line, and that patience and persistence are often as important as ambition. Similarly, living in different cities and traveling internationally have challenged me to step outside familiar routines and see the world from different perspectives.

For me, being a lifelong learner is not about constantly collecting achievements or mastering every subject. It is about remaining curious, continuing to grow, and being willing to take on new challenges, regardless of where they lead.

Why I Built This Website

I created this website to bring together the different parts of my life in one place. Over the years, my interests and experiences have extended across academic research, software engineering, teaching, running, travel, and personal explorations. Rather than keeping these experiences separate, I wanted a space where I could document them as parts of a continuing journey.

Some of the stories shared here look back on experiences that shaped me, from my academic and professional development to years of running and exploring new places. Others focus on what I am working toward today, including new learning goals, personal challenges, and plans for the future.

This website is also a way to preserve memories, reflect on my progress, and share experiences that others might find interesting or useful. It is not intended to present a finished story, but to document a life that continues to evolve through learning, challenges, and new experiences.

Looking Ahead

As I look toward the future, I hope to continue building a life that brings together learning, meaningful work, running, travel, and personal connections. My interests and priorities will undoubtedly evolve, but I want to keep challenging myself, exploring new opportunities, and making progress toward goals that matter to me.

Many of the experiences documented on this website began with curiosity or a personal challenge, and I expect the years ahead to bring new ones. Through my Current Focus and Five-Year Vision pages, I share what I am working toward today and how I hope to shape the next chapter of my journey.
